Elective summaries and favourites
A member asked: "Is it possible to include a brief summary on the subject for each micro training? That would help deciding on where to spend time on electives. It would also be useful if there were a way to favourite each elective for filtering down to a cherry picked list." Every elective card shows what the session covers, and a star builds the member's own shortlist, filtered in one click.

1 · ReadEach card on /micro-sessions shows two to three lines on what the session covers, under the title. Written once per session in the admin editor.
2 · StarA star on every card. One tap adds the elective to the member's favourites; tap again to remove. Saved to the account, so it follows them across devices.
3 · ShortlistA "Favourites" pill beside the certificate filter shows only starred electives, on every tab.

Define: Definition of the Problem
The problem in one sentence. A member choosing electives sees only a title, topic tags and a date, so they open session after session to find out what each covers, and they have nowhere to keep the ones they want to come back to.
Today
| Catalogue card | Code and date line, topic tags, title, and the member's own status. No summary. |
| Session page | Shows the description when one is written; nothing when it is empty. |
| Filters | Tabs (Access Anytime, Live Sessions, Completed), sort (Newest, Name, Code), certificate. No way to mark or filter a personal pick. |
What it must do
Phase A · Summaries
| Card summary | The session description under the title, clamped to three lines. Empty description: nothing renders, no gap. |
| Every session has one | Every published elective has a description of 40 to 280 characters: what it covers and what the member walks away with. |
Phase B · Favourites
| Star | On every card, all tabs. Toggles instantly; rolls back with a short error if the save fails. Label: "Add to favourites" / "Remove from favourites". |
| Filter | "Favourites" pill beside the certificate filter. Combines with tab, sort and certificate. Empty: "No favourites yet. Tap the star on any elective to add it here." |
| Saved | Per member, on the server. Same list on phone and desktop. |
Rules
- A favourite is private to the member. No counts, no manager view, no effect on credit.
- Not in scope: ordering favourites, sharing lists, recommendations.
- "Member", never "student".
Verify before building
- How many published electives have an empty description today. That count sizes the writing work.
- Who writes and approves the missing summaries.

Discover: Datasources Needed
Already there: course.description (added 19 Aug 2026), already on the catalogue row the list page reads, and editable in the admin micro-session editor. Phase A needs no backend change.
| We add | Phase | Holds | Who reads it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summaries | A | The written description for each published elective missing one. Content, not schema. | Everyone browsing the catalogue. |
| Favourite | B | Member, session, when starred. One row per pair; removing deletes it. | That member only. |
| Favourites API | B | List my favourites, add one, remove one. Proxied through the FE API layer like every other route. | The catalogue page. |

Definition of Done
Done means (on test.aiolabz.com)
- Coverage checked. The count of empty descriptions is known, and every published elective has one.
- Summaries. Every card shows its summary under the title, clamped at three lines; a session with no description shows no gap; phone and desktop read cleanly.
- Star. Toggles on every tab; survives a reload and a second device; a failed save rolls back and says so.
- Filter. "Favourites" shows only starred electives and combines with tab, sort and certificate; the empty state reads as written.
- Private. Another member cannot read or change my favourites; credit and progress are untouched.
- Tests green, loading and error states handled, released by a human.
Deployment plan
A1 · Count and writePull the empty-description count; write the missing summaries in the admin editor, reviewed by the content owner.
A2 · Summaries on the cardC1, A1Render the description on the card, add the length hint and preview in the editor. Front end only. Release.
B1 · Favourites storeBackendThe favourite table, list, add and remove endpoints, owner-only access. PR to staging.
B2 · Star and filterC1, C2Proxy route, the star with instant toggle and rollback, the Favourites pill and empty state. Release.
First week after each releaseRead the measures. Day 30: keep, change or drop favourites based on members who star.
Risks
| Thin summaries | A vague line helps nobody. The editor preview and the 40-character floor push for a real sentence; the content owner signs off on each. |
| Cards grow uneven | Clamp at three lines so the grid stays aligned. |
| Stars nobody uses | The Day 30 read decides; removing the pill and star costs one PR. |
